ESP (English for Specific Purposes) is defined as a tactic of language teaching in which all choices as to method and skills are based on the learner's purpose for learning. Following on from this concept, the study used needs analysis (N A) frame work to investigate the extent of English language acquisition use in the careers of aviators, the required level of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and the perception of them towards their English language preparation during their previous college study, to update and improve an ESP course in aviation. A questionnaire of 24 items was constructed and 300 of them were distributed to three different aviation sites out of which 230 were filled and returned. Sample population consisted of pilots, navigators, air traffic controllers and radio operators. The reliability of the questionnaire was examined to ensure the consistency of the questions in assessing the desired variables. For each item and sub-item, frequency and percentage have been calculated by using the SPSS statistical package. The analysis of the results clarified that because English language was the communication tool at workplace, the aviators were highly motivated in improving their English ability. The findings also indicated that listening was the most important skill to the aviation specialists, followed by speaking, and reading, with writing as the least important skill. Finally, the analysis of the answers by respondents revealed that the learners' needs were essential in different activities of the participants. The findings can help syllabus designers, and ESP material developers to develop appropriate courses for aviators.Keywords: Needs analysis, Second language acquisition, English for specific purposes, Aviation language needs
